Social MinistryThe Social Ministry of First United spans many ages and has no borders when it comes to its outreach programs. Once a month, members conduct a worship service for the community of the Med-Inn. Besides sharing the Gospel, many hymns, especially the old favorites, can be heard throughout the halls. This group also helps monthly with the local Habitat for Humanity program. When Habitat doesn’t have work in the area, the members of the committee will do necessary repairs to the homes of parishioners. Each September, the Social Ministry collects clothes and supplies for health kits for Lutheran World Relief. They make a connection with the children in the congregation by having them pack the boxes along with the School Kits and soap to ship out in October. At Christmas time, you can find many volunteers from this group ringing bells for the Salvation Army. Besides its annual food drive during the holidays for the Greater Hammond Community Center, the Social Ministry Committee also maintains a small food bank to help meet the needs of the community. This is just a sample of the many outreach activities the Social Ministry Committee is involved in. |
