Youth & Family Ministry

The Youth and Family Ministry program of First United Lutheran Church ministers to the families of the congregation and specifically to children who are in kindergarten through high school.

Throughout the year, various events for families are organized such as a family bowling outing, canoe and camping trips, a day at Great America or the water-park, and congregational lunches.  Youth and Family Ministry sponsors the Rally Day picnic each fall that has activities planned for both the youth and the adults.

The spiritual formation of the youth is fostered through youth participation in youth nights that are biblically and spiritually centered, a yearly lock-in, Worship, and service to the Lord.  The youth portray the Stations of the Cross for the Good Friday Service, and host the mid-week potluck dinners and Worship Services during Advent and Lent.  During the summer, they invite the congregation to attend a mid-week sunset Worship Service at the Indiana Dunes in Chesterton.

Each summer the high-school youth attend a week-long Mission Trip where they work in God’s service to the elderly in senior centers and to the youth by conducting a children’s Vacation Bible School.  They also work in soup kitchens, homeless shelters, food banks, and often times with the Salvation Army.  Some of the past locations for the mission trips have been to Tijuana, Mexico, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Boston, Key West, and New York City.  The experience of attending a mission trip enriches the youths’ faith and deepens their dedication to living in service to our Lord.
